Bluetooth LE Audio in hearing aids
Bluetooth LE Audio is the newest Bluetooth standard for audio and is developed as a more energy-efficient and future-ready solution for devices such as hearing aids. Unlike Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth LE Audio is specifically designed for continuous audio streaming with low power consumption, which makes the technology particularly suitable for modern hearing aids.
Bluetooth LE vs Bluetooth Classic
Bluetooth Classic has been used in hearing aids for many years and still works reliably in many solutions. Bluetooth LE Audio, however, is a newer standard that is gradually being implemented in newer hearing aid series.
The most important differences are:
- Bluetooth LE is more energy efficient
- Bluetooth LE is designed for future features such as Auracast
- Classic Bluetooth is still used by several manufacturers and remains fully functional
Bluetooth LE does not automatically replace classic Bluetooth but exists alongside it during a transition period.
Hearing aids with Bluetooth LE Audio
Several newer hearing aids already support Bluetooth LE Audio. This includes the following models and series:
Signia IX
- Pure C&G
- Pure C&G T
- Styletto
- Motion M, P and SP
- Active Pro
Rexton Reach
- R-Li
- R-Li T
- SR
- Rugged
Widex Allure
- RIC
- BTE
- ITC
Oticon Intent
Oticon Intent hearing aids also support Bluetooth LE Audio. This means that Oticon Intent is prepared for future Bluetooth-based features, including Auracast, once these are supported directly in the hearing aids.
Bluetooth LE and Auracast
Bluetooth LE Audio is a prerequisite for Auracast, but the two technologies are not the same. Not all hearing aids with Bluetooth LE Audio support Auracast directly.
If you want to learn more about what Auracast is and how the technology can be used in practice, you can find a detailed explanation here.
